How this calories burned calculator works
This calories burned calculator uses a MET value for the activity you choose, then combines it with your body weight and duration. METs are multiples of resting metabolic rate; the values are population averages measured in labs, so they do not adjust for fitness, age, body composition or efficiency.
The result is an estimate with meaningful error bars. It includes the resting energy you would have burned anyway. Subtracting roughly 1 MET gives the extra burn, which helps explain why fitness trackers and this calculator can disagree.
kcal per minute = MET × 3.5 × body weight in kg ÷ 200; kcal = kcal per minute × minutes MET values come from the Compendium of Physical Activities. They describe an average lab-based estimate, not a personal measurement or a promise of exact energy expenditure.
Calories burned calculator FAQ
What is a MET?
A MET is a multiple of resting metabolic rate. MET values are population averages measured in labs, and they do not adjust for fitness, age, body composition or efficiency.
Does the result include resting calories?
Yes. The total includes the resting energy you would have used during that time. Subtracting roughly 1 MET gives an estimate of the extra burn.
Why does this differ from my fitness tracker?
Trackers and this calculator use different measurements and assumptions. The MET values are averages, so meaningful error bars are expected.
Can I enter pounds instead of kilograms?
Yes. Choose lb and the calculator converts your weight using 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg before calculating.
Are activity-specific calculators available?
Yes. Try the jump-rope, jogging, jumping-jacks and steps-to-calories calculators for activity-specific versions.
