How jump rope calorie estimates work

If you are searching for “how many calories does jump rope burn,” this calculator gives a pace-based estimate from your body weight and session duration. It uses three conditioning-exercise MET values: 8.8 for slow, 11.8 for moderate and 12.3 for fast jump rope.

A MET, or metabolic equivalent of a task, expresses the energy cost of an activity compared with resting. Pace matters because it changes the intensity and therefore the MET value; duration tells us how long that intensity continues, but ten minutes fast is not the same effort as ten minutes slow.

The running comparison uses 8.3 METs for running at 8 km/h (5 mph). It answers how many minutes of that running would use the same estimated calories, not which workout is better.

Calories per minute = MET × 3.5 × body weight (kg) ÷ 200; total calories = calories per minute × minutes

This is an estimate, not a measurement. MET values are population averages, and real burn varies with technique, rest between sets, fitness and body composition. Body weight in pounds is converted to kilograms before the equation is applied.

How many calories does jump rope burn in 10 minutes?

It depends on weight and pace. For a 70 kg person, this estimate is about 108 calories at a slow pace, 145 at a moderate pace or 151 at a fast pace for 10 minutes. Those are estimates, not measurements.

Does jump rope burn more calories than running?

In this comparison, all three jump rope pace values are higher than the 8.3 MET value used for running at 8 km/h, so jump rope burns more per minute in the estimate. Actual burn depends on how you move, how often you rest and how steadily you hold the pace.

Why does a heavier person burn more calories?

The standard MET equation multiplies by body weight in kilograms. With the same pace and duration, moving a heavier body requires more energy in the population-average estimate.

How accurate is a MET calorie estimate?

It is useful for comparison and planning, but it is not a personal measurement. METs are population averages; technique, rest between sets, fitness, body composition and how closely your pace matches the category can all change real energy use.

What does the running-equivalent number mean?

It is the number of minutes of running at 8 km/h that would use the same estimated calories as your jump rope session, using 8.3 METs for running. It does not compare the workouts’ training effects or difficulty.
