How this treadmill calories burned calculator works

This treadmill calories burned calculator uses the ACSM metabolic equations, which account for incline instead of relying on a flat MET lookup. Enter speed, grade, duration, body weight and the walking or running equation that fits your workout.

The result includes estimated calories, calories per minute, an oxygen-use estimate (VO2) and distance. Treadmill consoles can overestimate when they assume a default body weight, and holding the handrails reduces the actual cost substantially below the equation's estimate.

Walking VO2 = (0.1 × speed) + (1.8 × speed × grade) + 3.5; running VO2 = (0.2 × speed) + (0.9 × speed × grade) + 3.5; kcal/min = VO2 × kg ÷ 1000 × 5

Speed is converted to metres per minute and incline to a decimal grade. The walking equation is valid roughly from 1.9–4.0 mph, while the running equation is valid roughly from 5 mph and above; the calculator warns when your speed falls outside the selected equation's range.

Does incline change the calorie estimate?

Yes. The ACSM equations include grade, so a positive incline increases the estimated oxygen cost compared with the same speed on a flat treadmill.

Should I choose walking or running?

Choose the equation that matches your workout. Walking is validated roughly from 1.9 to 4.0 mph, and running from about 5 mph and above; the result includes a warning outside those ranges.

Why might my treadmill console show a different number?

Consoles may assume a default body weight or use a different method. Holding the handrails also reduces your actual effort compared with the equation's assumption.

Are the calories exact?

No. This is an estimate based on speed, incline, duration, body weight and the selected ACSM equation. Individual energy cost can differ.

Are my values saved?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and this tool does not save the values you enter.
